Making Thinking Visible!
The project “Making Thinking Visible!” introduces a dialogic approach to mathematics education, where students explain, compare, and discuss different solution strategies. Each lesson includes dedicated time for discussion, helping to make students’ thinking visible and supporting a deeper understanding of mathematics.
The goal is to develop number sense, problem-solving skills, and mathematical confidence, while fostering a classroom culture where explaining one’s thinking is a natural part of learning.
Project Content
The aim of the project is to bring more discussion and meaningful understanding into mathematics education and to support teachers in applying dialogic teaching methods.
As part of the project:
A dialogic approach (Number Talks methodology) is implemented in mathematics lessons
20–25 lower secondary mathematics teachers are trained and supported in their professional development
Practical teaching materials and a collection of tasks are developed
A pilot project is carried out in schools in Pärnu County
Data is collected and analyzed on changes in students’ learning and attitudes
This approach helps students better understand mathematical relationships and encourages them to express their thinking.
Broader Goals and Impact
The project contributes to shaping mathematics education where understanding, discussion, and active student participation are central.
In the long term, the project contributes to:
The development of students’ number sense and problem-solving skills
Increased mathematical confidence and willingness to learn
The shift towards more dialogic and learner-centered teaching practices
